North Korea says it is banning South Korean companies from transferring their equipment and facilities out of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex. The Unification Ministry in Seoul said Monday that North Korea's Central Guidance Bureau for Special Zone Development issued the notification to South Korean firms in the Gaeseong complex earlier on Sunday.
The North said in the notification that South Korean firms wishing to take their equipment and materials out of the North would have to declare their materials with the North’s tax office.
The notification added that any firm attempting to transport equipment back to South Korea would first have to pay off any debts they might hold with the North. In the event the firms attempt to take equipment back to the South for repair, confirmation from North Korea’s tax office will be needed.
The North Korean agency also said that it was making efforts to maintain normal operations at the industrial complex, and that if the complex were shut down, South Korea would be held responsible.
The Unification Ministry said the North’s notification was not out of the ordinary and was simply a reaffirming of regulations on management at the industrial park.
